About the data

This site is built from the public repository for “Expanding the Measurement of Culture with a Sample of Two Billion Humans” (Journal of the Royal Society Interface, 2022). The core country-level inputs are the Facebook cultural distance matrices for all interests, plus the major interest categories and the published benchmark culture groupings.

Lower distance means stronger cultural similarity. In the interactive tools, the map colors emphasize cultural proximity, while the tooltips always show the underlying distance values.
